How a driving Assessment Works
At THERAPRISE, your life journey is our purpose.
Every Theraprise driving assessment has the following two parts as the basis of the whole process. Knowing what’s involved takes the worry out of it.
How it Works
1. Off-road clinical assessment
The first session is conducted by your occupational therapy driving assessor (OTDA), in our clinic room or at your home. It covers your driving and medical history, your understanding of current road law, and screening of the physical, visual, sensory and thinking abilities that safe driving depends on. There’s no driving in this session.
2. On-road practical assessment
The second session is an on-road drive with your OTDA and a specialist driving instructor, in a dual-control vehicle. The assessment can’t be done in your own car — the dual controls are there for safety, so the instructor can assist if needed. It’s completed in an automatic or manual vehicle to suit you, and can incorporate any vehicle modifications being considered.
After the assessment
Your OTDA prepares a report with clear recommendations for your referring GP or specialist and, where relevant, VicRoads Medical Review. We’ll talk you through the outcome and the next steps.
